Understanding Cellulite

Cellulite develops when several factors come together under the skin. Tightly tethered connective tissue bands pull down in some areas, forming dimples and depressions. In between these bands, pockets of fat can bulge upward. If the overlying skin is thin or has lost elasticity, these irregularities become more visible.

Hormonal influences such as estrogen, along with weight changes, aging, smoking, and sun exposure, can all make cellulite more pronounced. While it is extremely common and not a sign of poor health, it can be frustratingly resistant to diet and exercise.

What Is Avéli™ Cellulite Treatment?

AvéliTM is an FDA-cleared procedure designed specifically to improve the appearance of cellulite by addressing one of its key structural causes: the fibrous bands (septa) that pull the skin downward.

At The Surgeon’s Spa – Beachwood and The Surgeon’s Spa – Westlake, Avéli is performed in the office under local anesthesia. A slender device with a tiny cutting element is inserted through small skin openings. Using a built-in light to guide placement under the skin, your provider identifies and releases the fibrous bands responsible for dimples and short creases. Once these bands are released in a controlled, three-dimensional pattern, the surface of the skin can appear smoother.

The goal is precise treatment of individual cellulite depressions rather than generalized “tightening,” which allows for a more tailored and predictable result.

What to Expect During Avéli™ Cellulite Treatment

Your experience begins with a consultation at The Surgeon’s Spa. During this visit, our advanced practice providers will:

  • Review your medical history and medication.
  • Examine the areas where cellulite bothers you most.
  • Identify whether your concerns are primarily cellulite, skin laxity, or fat distribution.
  • Discuss realistic expectations and how Avéli might fit into a broader contouring plan.

On the day of your procedure:

  • The treatment area is carefully mapped and marked, including specific dimples and short creases that are likely to improve with release.
  • The skin is cleansed and numbed with local anesthetic so you remain comfortable.
  • The Avéli device is introduced through tiny punctures in the skin. Guided by its internal light and tactile feedback, your provider locates the fibrous bands that are tethering the skin.
  • These bands are then released at the appropriate depth and direction, freeing the skin and smoothing the treated areas.

The procedure typically takes about an hour, depending on how many areas and dimples are treated. At the end of the session, the small entry sites are dressed; no stitches are usually needed.

Most patients can shower the same day and return to light activities quickly. Exercise is generally resumed the next day, and we’ll ask you to gently massage the treated areas for several weeks to encourage even healing and optimal contour.

Avéli™ Cellulite Treatment FAQs

Local anesthesia is used to keep you comfortable during the procedure. You may feel pressure or a tugging sensation, but most patients describe the experience as very tolerable. Some soreness or tenderness afterward is expected and usually improves over several days.

The fibrous bands that are released do not typically grow back. However, aging, weight changes, and skin quality can all continue to evolve, so no cellulite treatment can guarantee a completely dimple-free appearance for life.

Many patients achieve their main goals with a single Avéli session. In some cases, a secondary refinement treatment may be recommended, depending on your anatomy and expectations.

Some improvement can be seen relatively early, but swelling and bruising may briefly obscure your results. As these effects resolve over several weeks to months, the contour becomes more apparent.

Ideal candidates have visible cellulite dimples and reasonable skin tone in the treatment area. Avéli is designed to improve the appearance of cellulite, not erase every ripple or address significant loose skin. A consultation will help clarify whether this procedure aligns with your goals.
