What Is Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a non-invasive light-based treatment that uses brief flashes of broad-spectrum energy to address a variety of skin concerns. A handheld device emits high-intensity pulses of light that penetrate the surface of the skin, where the energy is absorbed by pigment (melanin), blood vessels (hemoglobin), or other targeted structures.

Different wavelengths within the IPL spectrum are selected to treat different concerns.
For example:

  • Certain wavelengths target rosacea and visible capillaries
  • Others correct brown spots, sun damage, and melasma

This versatility allows IPL to address multiple issues in a single treatment series, making it a popular option for patients looking to improve skin clarity and radiance without downtime.

What’s the Difference Between IPL and a Laser?

While both IPL devices and lasers use controlled bursts of light energy, they differ in how that energy is delivered:

  • Lasers emit one specific wavelength, making them highly focused.
  • IPL emits a range of wavelengths, making it effective for diffuse concerns like redness, pigmentation, and uneven tone.
  • Lasers tend to be preferred for resurfacing or for very precise targets, while IPL excels at treating widespread discoloration and vascular conditions.

What is BBL® Hero?

BBL® HERO™ (High Energy Rapid Output) is a next-generation, high-performance form of IPL. At The Surgeon’s Spa – Beachwood and The Surgeon’s Spa – Westlake, we use BBL® HERO™ to treat:

  • Rosacea and facial redness
  • Fine facial veins
  • Melasma
  • Sun spots and brown pigment
  • Post-surgical or traumatic redness
  • Overall dullness or uneven skin tone

In addition to correcting discoloration, BBL® HERO™ delivers energy that can stimulate collagen and other dermal components, supporting an overall rejuvenating effect on the skin.

Treatments are quick and well-tolerated, and most patients experience only mild warmth during the light pulses. Downtime is typically nonexistent, although patients should avoid strong sun exposure after treatment. A series of sessions produces the most meaningful results.

BBL® / Intense Pulsed Light FAQs

BBL® can improve age spots, redness, broken capillaries, rosacea, uneven tone, dullness, and early signs of aging. Because advanced IPL devices require skilled technique and appropriate wavelength selection, results depend heavily on the expertise of your provider. At The Surgeon’s Spa, all treatments are performed by experienced injectors and advanced practice providers trained under triple-board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Steven Goldman.

Forever Young BBL® uses a specific series of IPL treatments performed at regular intervals to keep the skin bright, firm, and even-toned over time. These sessions stimulate collagen and other structural proteins and are often combined with medical-grade skincare or injectable maintenance treatments for long-term rejuvenation.

Most patients benefit from 3–6 treatments, spaced several weeks apart. Conditions like rosacea and melasma are chronic, so periodic maintenance treatments may be recommended. Forever Young BBL® sessions are often scheduled every 6 months as part of a comprehensive skincare regimen.
