What is CoolSculpting®?

CoolSculpting® is a non-invasive body contouring treatment that uses controlled cooling (cryolipolysis) to selectively target stubborn pockets of fat. The cooling panels draw the tissue between them and lower the temperature of the fat cells to the point of injury, while protecting the overlying skin.

Over the following weeks, many of the treated fat cells are gradually broken down and cleared by the body. As this process unfolds, the treated area can appear slimmer and more refined.

At The Surgeon’s Spa – Beachwood and The Surgeon’s Spa – Westlake, CoolSculpting® is typically recommended for discrete areas of fullness that do not justify surgery and are resistant to diet and exercise.

What to Expect During Coolsculpting?

What to Expect During CoolSculpting® Treatment

Your CoolSculpting® experience starts with a consultation at The Surgeon’s Spa. During that visit, your provider will:

  • Review your medical history.
  • Identify areas of diet- and exercise-resistant fat.
  • Discuss what CoolSculpting can and cannot achieve.
  • Create a customized plan, including the number and placement of applicators and potential need for multiple sessions.

On treatment day:

  • The targeted areas are marked while you are in a natural position to accurately assess contour.
  • A gel pad is placed on the skin to protect the surface and assist in conducting the cooling.
The CoolSculpting® applicator is applied, gently drawing the skin and underlying fat between cooling panels via suction.
  • As the session begins, you may feel intense cold, tugging, or pressure, which typically eases after several minutes as the area becomes numb. Many patients read, use their phone, answer emails, or simply rest during the session.
  • After the cooling cycle (often around 35 minutes per applicator), the device is removed. The treated area may appear firm, red, or temporarily swollen. A brief manual massage is performed, which may help enhance the fat-reduction effect.

Most patients return to normal daily activities right away. Mild tenderness, numbness, or swelling can persist for days to weeks but usually remains manageable.

CoolSculpting® FAQs

Common areas include the abdomen, flanks, back, inner and outer thighs, upper arms, and under the chin. Your provider will let you know which zones are best suited to this technology.

Many patients achieve meaningful improvement with one treatment cycle per area, while others choose additional sessions to further refine their results. This is discussed at your consultation based on your goals.

Once injured fat cells are cleared from the body, they do not typically return. However, maintaining a stable weight and healthy lifestyle is important to preserving your outcome.

CoolSculpting® is a body contouring treatment—not a weight-loss procedure. It is best for patients who are near a stable, healthy weight but have localized bulges that bother them.

Most patients resume work and regular activities immediately. Temporary numbness, swelling, or soreness are common but usually mild.

Liposuction can remove larger volumes of fat and may be more appropriate for some patients. Others prefer CoolSculpting® because it is non-surgical. Our team will help you understand the pros and cons of each approach.
